Appropriation Brief

I thought the idea of taking logos and brand icons and changing them quite interesting, like the work that Richard Prince does, but with more of a funny twist to them.

I took these three logos to edit, mainly because they were easiest to edit, and also because they had names and fonts that I could edit into other names, I had particular fun while doing the Adidas logo, as it has particularly cocky/chavvy connotations, and you can pretty much guess where I was going with it. FedEx was quite fun too, as I’ve been left too many times waiting for a delivery, sitting indoors getting very annoyed because it’s late, or I missed it the first time. Snapchat too was quite interesting, as I personally quite like Snapchat as an app, but never really post much in the way of selfies, I find it interesting to look at people’s lives and what they document on this app, if only for 24 hours, but at the same time, some people do document a little too much, and you end up flicking through some real ‘crap’ (like someone’s hot chocolate, why document that, mate?)

Found Objects Triptych Brief

For this brief my mind was pretty blank; I didn’t really know what I wanted to do/make, so I just wandered around town and picked up a few things I thought would be interesting to photograph. My friend Ali’s work really inspired me, so I tried to look a little bit into creating interesting angles with my objects.

I  really like these photos, I feel like the colours and the angles work really well with the objects. I also like the way the leather of my sofa looks in these photographs, I feel like it worked well as a background.

Portrait Brief

For this brief I thought about the fact that people hide things – you can see a part of them, the part that they allow you to see, so I thought that taking portraits of people with part of their face concealed would be an interesting idea

Rachel Jake Matthew Sarah

My flatmate, Sarah’s face is more exposed than the others, because, since I came to uni, she has been the most open of my flatmates/friends, and I know her very well, she’s a very open person, in many ways, whereas the others are slightly more closed off (no offence to them <3)

I’m quite pleased with these photos, as they are all a bit personal.

Here are some images I rejected:

Some of Rachel’s photos are a little blurred or not flattering, so I decided not to use them, and the one of Matt seemed a little too posed, so I decided against it.

Home Brief

For this brief, I had the idea that I would initially take my family photos and remake them with my flatmates- essentially my new family (if only for this year). I couldn’t quite figure out how to make this work, with my flatmates being generally very busy, throughout the week and throughout the day, so I struggled to have them all in the flat for a long enough time to take photos with them. So instead I decided to go for the concept of Spaces Filled, with the idea of it’s not the area that makes the home, but the people in it, so I took photos of empty spaces, and then photos with people there.

I drew upon Brian Law’s few photographs of Empty Spaces and Frank Callaghan’s photographs of Empty Spaces

This photo in particular resonated with me, because I began to think about the idea of home being characterized by the inhabitants.

These spaces interested me as I thought about what I spent most of my time doing whilst at Uni/at my flat, either studying, cleaning up/cooking, or sleeping. I used Jake as a model because of convenience, plus as he’s doing media, he has the same schedule as me, and knows how to act around a camera. I’m pretty happy with how these photos turned out.

Here are some of the photos that I rejected:

Most of these photos were rejected because they were out of focus, or had poor exposure, or weren’t quite the look I was going for, as is the case with the first three photos.
